Alternative Student Kit Includes More Required Materials
In response to member feedback, we have a new Adventures in Diving crewpak which includes a surface marker buoy (aka safety sausage) and a whistle in lieu of the Nav-Finder.
Why the new signaling devices?
PADI Standards require Adventures in Diving / AOW students carry an audible signaling device throughout their training, and visual signaling devices are recommended for divers of all levels.
Is PADI Getting Rid of the Nav-Finder?
The Nav-Finder remains a useful tool for many instructors and student divers. That said, putting safety equipment in the hands of divers is of primary importance. The Nav-Finder remains available as part of the Underwater Navigator crewpak (60023) and as an ala carte item (60051).
The Adventures in Diving crewpak with Nav-Finder (60325, and 60307) will be available until the end of 2009 or until our supply is exhausted.
Why Use a Crewpak Instead of Book & Table?
The new crewpak offers several advantages for retailers:
- Both student and retailer save money buying required materials as a package
- Safety equipment becomes a permanent addition to student's gear which they may replace or upgrade
- Increased awareness of signaling devices can drive sales of signaling devices to other divers.

Hi There,
Any more details on the SMB? Based on the price, I imagine oral inflate or LP inflator hose is not an option with the PADI version included. How is the line connected to the SMB, is it weighted?
When will the new EANx specialty instructor guide be available?
PS I am located a ways outside your region. I found you through your post on Camille's IDC Blog. Great Blog!
Thank you,
Steve
Hi Steve,
Our SMB is not weighted and does not have an oral inflate option or way to hook in to the LP inflator.
PADI's SMB is a basic but functional model. We did lots of tests in the PADI pool.
It's a bright orange nylon tube with reflective material down the sides and a hole in the bottom. It rolls up to fit in a BC pocket and has velcro to secure the bundle.
Even though it has a simple design, I think it serves an important purpose. Giving every AOW student a SMB raises awareness of the visual signaling device and (I hope you'll agree) that a very basic safety device is better than no safety device.
Regarding the new EANx instructor guide: PADI Americas has them in stock. Not sure what your local office is? If you're a friend of Camille's I'm guessing PADI Asia-Pacific. The part number is 70244 if you want to ask them for it or try their online shopping cart.
The student EANx materials aren't out yet in paper, however. The only way for a student to do the new EANx course is through PADI eLearning.
Hope this help! Thanks for your kind words. Feel free to email me directly if you ever need to at: megan.denny at padi dot com.
Yes, this help very much. Great to see it added as it will encourage even more instructors to include SMB deployment in the AOW course.
I'll find out about 70244 locally. If and when online PICS become available for independent instructors it could make the new e-Learning EANx course more viable.
Thank you,
Steve
Hi All,
The new SMB sounds great, but some more details would be great. It was described as basic, does that mean open ended or closed and does it have a dump valve??
Thanks,
Paul
Great question,
The sausage is 51 ½” long and 5 ½” inches wide. It does not have a dump valve, just a hole at the bottom.
You can get both the safety sausage and whistle as a set for $16 as part of a promo we're running. The promo ends 7 May 2010.
